Why Shenzhen and APEC matter for New Zealand

Shenzhen hosts the 2026 leaders' meeting

Shenzhen is scheduled to host the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting on 18-19 November 2026. Leaders from APEC's 21 member economies meet to discuss regional economic cooperation, alongside a wider programme of ministerial and business meetings. The September Hello APEC market was a local cultural event hosted by Shekou MSCE ahead of that gathering.

A local opportunity to introduce New Zealand

New Zealand is a founding APEC member. In May 2026, our Trade Minister reported that APEC economies receive more than 70 per cent of New Zealand's exports. The forum helps New Zealand strengthen regional relationships and address barriers to trade. At community level, the Shekou market offered residents a chance to encounter New Zealand products, food, sport and Māori culture directly, with NZGBA bringing together the local people and businesses who made the New Zealand section possible.

Food, drinks and businesses

The New Zealand section featured Craft Head Brewing Co., Pic's Peanut Butter, Champion Wines, Babich Wines, Comvita and ZURU, alongside pavlova and mānuka honey. NZGBA also worked with Much Moore to bring New Zealand hokey pokey ice cream to the event.

Culture and activities

New Zealand volunteers introduced visitors to cricket through interactive activities. The programme also included a Māori haka performance, with visitors joining in.

Alongside Australia and Papua New Guinea

Tourism Australia and AustCham South China were in attendance. Papua New Guinea was also represented, completing the Oceania market alongside New Zealand and Australia.
