GBA city guide

Dongguan 东莞

Dongguan sits between Guangzhou and Shenzhen, with smartphone companies in Chang'an, Humen's Opium War sites and Huawei's European-inspired campus at Songshan Lake. Guancheng's garden heritage and public lakeside spaces give a New Zealand business visit room for history and time outdoors.

Dongguan in the Greater Bay Area

Guancheng, Dongcheng, Nancheng and Wanjiang form the central urban area. Humen lies farther south, while Songshan Lake and the manufacturing towns have their own centres. Keep the town or subdistrict name with each address: a central-city hotel and a meeting in Chang'an can mean a substantial cross-city journey.

Three parts of Dongguan to know

Guancheng and the central city

Keyuan Garden anchors a visit to the older city in Guancheng. Dongcheng has Huangqishan Forest Park; Nancheng has the Dongguan Science and Technology Museum.

Humen: museums, rail and clothing

Humen combines the Opium War Museum and coastal defences with a clothing and cable industry. Humen railway station is a separate arrival point from Dongguan station; the historic sites and commercial town sit within this southern part of the city.

Songshan Lake: public green spaces

The lakeside greenway, Taoyuan Park and Science Park provide outdoor stops among Songshan Lake's research and university campuses. Ask your company contact about access before planning a campus visit.

Arriving and getting around

Dongguan is spread across towns and central subdistricts. Dongguan and Dongguan South are separate railway stations; China Railway publishes their train services and tickets. Humen, Houjie and Songshan Lake are distinct destinations within the municipality.

Dongguan Metro Line 2 links Humen Railway Station and Dongguan Railway Station.

Humen: why 1839 matters

Lin Zexu, the Qing official charged with suppressing the opium trade, oversaw the destruction of confiscated opium at Humen in 1839. The pool site and nearby Opium War Museum explain this episode before the First Opium War began in 1840. The coastal forts show how the Pearl River entrance was defended.

Keyuan, Nanshe and Huayang Lake

Keyuan preserves a garden setting in Guancheng's older streets. Farther afield, Nanshe in Chashan has village buildings from the Ming and Qing periods, while Huayang Lake in Machong offers a wetland landscape. These are three different settings for seeing Dongguan beyond its industrial areas.

Industries and professional opportunities

Chang'an: OPPO and vivo

Smartphone makers OPPO and vivo both list company addresses in Chang'an: OPPO on Haibin Road in Wusha, and vivo on vivo Road. The town's wider industrial base includes electronics, hardware and moulds.

Songshan Lake: Huawei's Ox Horn campus

Huawei opened its Ox Horn campus on Songshan Lake's southern shore in June 2018. Its 12 groups of buildings take inspiration from European cities and house research, offices and meeting spaces.

Houjie, Humen and Dalang

Houjie hosts the International Famous Furniture Fair at Guangdong Modern International Exhibition Center, alongside a separate footwear industry. Humen specialises in clothing and transmission cables; Dalang brings together knitwear, yarns, garment design and knitting machinery. Furniture and clothing visitors can use Dongguan's exhibition listings to check the current programme.
