GBA city guide

Shenzhen 深圳

Shenzhen's electronics markets and technology companies are only part of its character. Huaqiangbei puts new devices on the shop counter; Dafen reveals an art trade that grew from export painting; Shekou brings restaurants and design culture to the waterfront. For Kiwi visitors, the city offers both serious industry research and NZGBA gatherings and local Kiwi contacts.

Shenzhen in the Greater Bay Area

Shenzhen lies on the mainland side of the Hong Kong boundary, south of Dongguan and west of Huizhou. Futian and Luohu form the central urban belt; Nanshan and Bao'an extend west towards the airport, while Yantian and Dapeng face the eastern coast. Longhua, Longgang, Guangming and Pingshan add substantial inland centres.

Choose your Shenzhen neighbourhood

Futian and Luohu: central city life

Futian combines Civic Center offices, the convention centre, Huaqiangbei and the shops and restaurants around Shopping Park. Lianhuashan adds a public park to this central district. Luohu has Dongmen's older shopping streets and Shenzhen Railway Station beside the Lo Wu crossing. Futian railway station and Futian Checkpoint are separate places; Wenjindu and Liantang are other crossings in Luohu.

Nanshan: distinguish Shekou, Houhai and Xili

Shekou's Sea World waterfront restaurants, Houhai's offices beside Shenzhen Bay and Xili's university and technology areas give Nanshan several distinct centres. Shekou is part of Nanshan; its Management and Service Center for Expats offers guidance on local administration and accommodation registration within its service area. Nantou Ancient City was the seat of Xin'an County, established in 1573.

Bao'an: airport and exhibition trips

Bao'an contains Shenzhen airport and Shenzhen World Exhibition and Convention Center. The western exhibition venue is separate from the convention centre in Futian; airport hotels, the exhibition area and Bao'an's urban centre are also distinct destinations.

Longhua and Longgang: rail, neighbourhoods and art

Longhua includes Shenzhen North station and the nearby Minzhi and Hongshan areas, with Guanlan elsewhere in the district. Longgang includes Buji, Bantian and Longcheng; Dafen Oil Painting Village is in Buji.

Pingshan and Guangming

Pingshan has its own railway station and the Yanzi Lake convention and exhibition venue. Guangming lies in northwestern Shenzhen: Gongming is a local subdistrict, while Guangmingcheng is the railway-station name. Pingshan Center metro station is separate from Pingshan railway station.

Yantian and Dapeng: plan a coastal outing

Yantian's Dameisha and Xiaomeisha offer beach settings. Farther southeast, Dapeng Fortress and Nan'ao combine a historic settlement with the coast of the Dapeng peninsula.

Arriving and getting around

Shenzhen has a metro network, its own airport and high-speed rail links. Futian and Shenzhen North are different railway stations. For a journey from Hong Kong, use the official crossing information alongside your rail or metro route; crossing the boundary involves immigration formalities.

Places and local culture

Dafen: from export paintings to original art

Dafen's painting trade took root in 1989, when Hong Kong art dealer Huang Jiang and other entrepreneurs brought export-oriented oil-painting work to the village. Dafen Art Museum was founded in 2007. Today the galleries and studios include original work as well as reproductions, making this Buji neighbourhood a place to see art as both a craft and a business.

Shekou: the ship and the arts centre

The Minghua ship is the recognisable landmark at Sea World, surrounded by restaurants and public space. Nearby, the Sea World Culture and Arts Center was designed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki. Together they give a waterfront walk a focus beyond the office towers: a ship at the heart of a neighbourhood and a building devoted to culture and design.

Industries and professional opportunities

Huaqiangbei: electronics trading and new products

Huaqiangbei in Futian is Shenzhen's concentrated electronics trading district. SEG and neighbouring specialist markets bring together components and finished devices, including smart headphones, AI glasses, wearables and companion robots. For buyers and product developers, the area offers a way to compare what is reaching the market and explore component options in one district.

Nanshan: chip design, communications and robotics

Nanshan connects research and product development with major technology businesses. Shenzhen High-tech Park, Liuxiandong and the Xili area have semiconductor and integrated-circuit businesses, alongside communications companies such as ZTE and OPPO. Robotics Valley follows Liuxian Avenue in northern Nanshan, bringing firms including DJI and UBTECH together with supporting businesses. DJI lists its headquarters at Sky City in Nanshan.

Bao'an: electronics production and battery machinery

Bao'an adds manufacturing depth to Shenzhen's technology economy. Fuhai has consumer-electronics production, while the battery-equipment cluster in Shiyan's Tangtou and Fuhai's Dejin industrial areas covers cell production, packaging and testing, including cutting, winding and stacking equipment. These specialisms matter for visitors researching how electronic and energy products are made, as well as those looking for production machinery.
